In the framework of attracting investment and increasing investment interest from China, Invest in Greece participated in the international fair for investment attraction in Beijing, China Overseas Investment Fair 2010 (COIF), held on November 2 & 3, 2010. On November 2, 2010, Invest in Greece, with the support of the Greek Commercial and Economic Affairs Office in Beijing, hosted an investment seminar, presenting mature investment opportunities in Greece.
COIF is held annually under the auspices of the National Development and Reform Commission. This year, the fair attracted approximately 4.100 visitors who had the chance to visit more than 200 exhibitors from 103 countries, of which 17 hosted investment seminars. Invest in Greece’s pavilion, communicating the message: “Greece. Welcome to a New Investment Era,” successfully attracted the interest of Chinese investors, while Invest in Greece’s executives provided visitors with information regarding the recent progress on the institutional investment framework of Greece, and investment opportunities by sector. They also distributed information through printed and electronic material.
More than 100 representatives of Chinese institutions, companies and media attended the investment seminar of Invest in Greece. The seminar focused on promoting new investment opportunities in the framework of the privatisation programme of Greece, presenting attractive investment sectors: Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Tourism, ICT, Food & Beverage, and Life Sciences. The Ambassador of Greece, H.E. Georgakelos, launched the seminar, and the General Secretary of the Ministry of Regional Development & Competitiveness, Mr. Drimousis, delivered the keynote speech, followed by Invest in Greece executive presentations. In the framework of his official visit to China for the closing ceremony of EXPO 2010, Mr. Drimousis highlighted the coordinated and intensive initiatives of the Greek Government to enhance business cooperation and investment synergies with China. The attendees of the seminar expressed their interest in investment opportunities in Greece, referred positively to economic developments, the new Bill on Strategic Investments, and the promotion of Greek-Chinese cooperation. They also expressed their strong interest in investment projects, especially in the RES sector.
On the sidelines of the Fair, Invest in Greece held scheduled meetings in Singapore and Beijing, with Chinese companies, in the sectors of innovation and technology, RES, Tourism, Real Estate and Construction. These companies expressed their interest in participating in projects of the Greek Government in broadband development; in the expansion of their existing investment activities in construction and real estate; as well as in Greece’s privitasation programme, especially in the development of ports and airports and in large water utility companies.
Equally important were the follow-up meetings held between Invest in Greece executives and representatives of Chinese companies in telecommunications and real estate, which have already signed business agreements with the Greek Government, during the two recent visits of the Chinese political leadership to Greece. These meetings resulted in these companies exploring the possibility to proceed – in addition to the projects agreed upon to date – with new projects in Greece related to their core business activity.
